There aren't many villages like Polopos left on the South Coast of Spain these days, simple, unspoiled and unhurried. There are just a handful of non Spanish residents who have sought out the peace and tranquility of this mountain retreat to set up their homes.

Our little house in the lower barrio has been carefully restored to retain virtually all of the features from a time gone by. The timber and cane ceilings, "grape tread" used for producing the home made wine plus all of the original walls. Matilde who now lives opposite was brought up in this house.

The first thing that will strike you will be the wonderful silence, only disturbed by the swallows living in the ruin close by.

The lounge/dining area is spacious with a door out onto the terrace, also from the terrace is direct access to the double bedroom. Views are down the valley and to the sea. The closest beach is "El Lancé" just 15 minutes down the hill.
The country kitchen has all you will need to be comfortable whilst the bathroom which is newly tiled has a good size shower cubicle.
The lounge has a wood burning stove, logs are charged extra, ask about this before you come and we will make sure you have a supply for your arrival.

Bird watchers will love this area. You are certain to see lots of Kestrel, Hoopoe, Bee Eaters, Swifts and the occasional Brown Eagle just to mention a few.

If walking is your choice then Polopos is the ideal base for you. Walk the mountain trails of the Sierra Contraviesa and locally the Sierra Salchicha, especially in the Spring when your senses will be assaulted by the perfumes of the wild sage, rosemary and fennel. The wild flower varieties are to many to even begin to list.

Our villagers love to welcome visitors and you can be certain your arrival will be known long before you unpack your suitcase. There is every chance someone will be at the door to say Hello (Ola) and make you feel at home. There is nobody more friendly than an Andalucian villager.

As in most small villages the community spirit is wonderful and the chance to "Fiesta" is never passed by.
Visit at any time of the year and there is a good chance you will find yourself immersed in some celebration or other. In October the local hillsides are alive for about 2 weeks with families out picking the grape harvest - to return home and start making their own wine. About a dozen or so have small bodegas and will sell their wine through the front door of their houses.

The summer Fiesta is in August, this is a big event because many of the children of the village who have left to live in the cities of Spain will return to spend their summer holidays here. At this time the village population will double.

Shopping is easy in Polopos as most things will be delivered to the village. At the last census there were only 43 cars registered to owners living here. It therefore makes sense for local business people in Castel de Ferro to have a delivery service. The baker brings fresh bread daily at about 10am. Gonzalo the baker speaks English.
Frozen food and vegetable merchants come weekly whilst the fish man is around 3 times a week. Listen for the car horns signalling their arrival.
Main shopping centres close by include Castel de Ferro and Motril.

Antonia is the key holder for the house and a friendlier soul you will never meet -  she lives in Visillo the road just below ours so you are sure to run into her often during your visit, she will always help if she can.

If you yearn for the simple life away from the rat race - you will love the charm of Polopos and its people.
