Alcaucin, Comares, Canillas, & the coast
Inland from the coastal towns of Torre del Mar and Caleta de Velez are some real treasures. A gem in the crown of the inland Costa del Sol is Lake Vinuela, only 15 minutes gentle drive from the beach.
This area is a walkers and artists paradise. The region is called the Axarquia.
Lake Vinuela is well stocked with carp and other varieties of fish. To fish the lake you will need to produce a licence from your own country - obtainable at the post office for a nominal fee. With this you are then entitled to purchase a Spanish permit on arrival.
Alcaucin is one of the small white Andalucian villages close to Lake Vinuela. The Village loves to Fiesta. The 20 of January, procession of San Sebastián, patron is the year's big event and of course Easter is a wonderful time to be here. San Isidro on May 15 is a week long celebration of cultural and traditional dance and party in general.
The main shopping centre is in Velez Malaga near the coast or then slightly farther afield - Nerja.
Velez Malaga can supply anything you are likely to need and has a first class municipal food market every day except Sunday. On the outskirts of Velez Malaga is a new and very large shopping mall with a big modern supermarket and multi screen cinema two screens in English.
You are never very far from the coast in this region and the towns of Torre del Mar, Calet de Velez and Torrox are just a few that are equipped to offer visitors a complete seaside package. There are restaurants and bars to suit every pocket and taste and of course virtually every watersport you could imagine.
There are lots of fascinating walks through the valleys and into the hills of the Axarquia. Fast running rivers bringing the melted snows down to the lower coastal regions and shade from the large eucalyptus and olive trees, assure you of a cool and comfortable resting place.
Alternatively perhaps, one of the country inns or "ventas" will provide a well earned thirst quencher.
Alcaucin, Comares Canillas, & the coast
Although not as well serviced by golf clubs as the western side of the Costa del Sol, we do have two excellent courses close by.
The courses of Baviera golf and Anoreta golf are both on the doorstep and welcome visiting golfers.
Trace the steep streets snaking through the Axarquia village of Comares to the old fort which dates back to medieval times.
Its Arabic past, is clearly visible at Comares Castle, the streets, houses, buildings all now considered to be Historic-Artistic Monuments. The town's main architecture and the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, date from the 16th century,
